WA Special Needs Children's Christmas Party
Sunday 18th November saw more than 2,000 special needs children and their families descend on the WA Special Needs Children’s Christmas party at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka.
The party, now in its 18th year, is held every year to provide children with disabilities and life threatening illnesses with a rare day out filled with the joy of Christmas. With no government funding, organisers of this charitable event rely on the generosity of the business community to fund the cost of toys, rides and other entertainment for the day. All proceeds from the event go to the Leukaemia Foundation.
This year, Kestral was a sponsor of the event and we sent staff members Shih Ching and Monica to the party. In typical Kestral fashion, they were happy to pitch in and lend a hand. Upon volunteering for duty, our considerate staff members became honorary Elves and handed out a mountain of toys (from stuffed animals to musical instruments) to a sizeable crowd of happy and very grateful children.
In all, our representatives had a rewarding day of fun. Marvelling at the massive quantity of toys and the throng of cheerful children at the present-giving portion of the day, Shih Ching reports,
“As someone who is used to spending hours at my desk working on something as intangible as software, it's both heart-warming and humbling to do some hands-on volunteering that benefits underprivileged kids directly. I'll definitely come back next year.”
Also coming back next year, Santa was happy to pose for photos before leaving for the busy season at the North Pole. We are looking forward to catching up with him again, at the 19th annual party.
Congratulations to the organisers of the WA Special Needs Children’s Christmas Party on a tremendously successful day. If you’d like to be involved with next year’s party, you can contact Raewyn Waerea on (08) 9375 7070
