Kestral at the HL7 International Working Group Meeting
Recently held in Sydney in conjunction with the Department of Health and Ageing, NEHTA, Standards Australia, HL7 New Zealand and Business Events Sydney, the HL7 International Working Group Meeting provided the forum for more than 50 Work Groups, Committees and Task Forces to progress the HL7 V2.x, CDA, HL7 V3 and EHR Standards. An extensive range of Courses, Tutorials and Workshops on the very latest developments in EHRs, clinical messaging, terminology etc. was on show by the global experts and leaders in eHealth.
Kestral sent key staff along to the conference to gain some very useful knowledge of HL7 and CDA standards. Technical Team Leader Angus Millar and Support Consultant Jacque Alsop are now certified for HL7 V2.6 and CDA V2 and are up-to-speed with the basics of Cross Enterprise Document Sharing (XDS).
Also attending the conference, Application Architect Gavin Morris dropped in on some very important sessions, including Introduction to v3, Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) & DiCOM and XDS & CDA. During the week, Gavin was able to gain invaluable knowledge in working group meetings from Implementable Technology Specifications (ITS), who map the standards for implementation; RIM Based Application Architecture (RIMBAA), who provide best-practice guidance to software developers using the HL7v3 information model; and Structured Documents, who are responsible for defining the CDA specification.
Over the years, Kestral has played a significant role in the HL7
community and the creation of its standards. A long-time developer
for Kestral at the time, Grahame Grieve was awarded the
Don Walker Award in 2009 for work on common data types
within HL7. There is no doubt there is real value in maintaining our
typically hands-on involvement in the development of HL7 standards,
to keep them ‘on track’ from a technical perspective for our
customers and gain a wealth of experience in the meantime.
Thanks to the hard work of those who attended the meeting, Kestral has added further understanding of HL7, EHR and CDA, which will ensure the highest quality technical support as users start to take advantage of the CDA functionality in our products.
