WA Health set out to replace the RIS and PACS supporting its metropolitan hospital network. The previous system was ageing, and the health service needed a platform that could support modern clinical workflows across multiple sites while giving practitioners more reliable access to images and reports.

Problem

The existing RIS and PACS no longer met the needs of a growing, multi-site health system. Issues encountered included:

Ageing infrastructure limiting system stability

Limited support for remote clinical staff

Inconsistent access to patient imaging and reporting across sites

These issues made it harder for practitioners to work efficiently across the network.

Approach

WA Health’s Medical Imaging Replacement Program set out to deploy a unified RIS/PACS solution across its major metropolitan hospital sites. The health service chose Kestral’s Karisma RIS for its ability to be customised to the specific clinical and operational needs of a large public health network.

Solution

Kestral worked closely with clinical stakeholders and subject matter experts across WA Health to design and configure Karisma for the rollout. Key enhancements included:

Since the rollout, WA Health has achieved:
  • Go-live completed at Royal Perth Hospital in October 2023, finishing installation across nine metropolitan public hospitals

Analysis

Karisma addressed the limitations of WA Health’s previous RIS and PACS by giving the network a single, stable platform.
